How the rankings work
Every story gets a fair hearing. Strong reader response gives it a larger audience. Weak response gradually moves it out of view. No single vote gets to crown a masterpiece.
The short version
Six Word Story uses reader judgments to discover quality. A new story enters a limited testing phase. Once enough different readers have judged it, confidence-adjusted approval and recent momentum determine whether it rises or sinks.
- Fair test
New stories are deliberately mixed into Rising until they have received an initial set of independent judgments.
- Confidence, not one lucky vote
A perfect score from one reader is treated cautiously. A strong result supported by more readers earns greater confidence.
- Positive momentum
Recent love helps a story climb. Recent negative judgments count more heavily, so dross loses visibility quickly.
- Freshness without amnesia
New activity matters, but an established story with sustained approval is not erased simply because it is older.
- Volume cannot buy first place
The formula limits the benefit of raw vote volume. Quality and confidence matter more than a sudden pile of clicks.
What the four lists mean
Rising
Strong recent reader response, adjusted for confidence and freshness, with a small number of stories still receiving their fair test.
Top
The most consistently approved stories, with enough votes to make that approval meaningful.
Divisive
Stories closest to an even split between positive and negative judgments. During private testing, the list uses clearly labelled prototype totals. After launch, it switches to stories with at least six genuine reader votes. Unanimous stories never qualify.
New
The latest submissions in chronological order. This is the unfiltered route for readers who like discovering stories first.
Resistance to spam and manipulation
Each reader can judge a story once. Voting and submissions are rate-limited, duplicate stories are refused, and links or obvious advertising are blocked. The precise weighting changes as the community grows, so a fixed gaming recipe is not published.
The ranking is a discovery system, not a claim that popularity and literary quality are identical. Its job is practical: give promising writing more chances to be read and allow weak or unwanted material to fade naturally.
The bargain is simple: readers provide honest instincts; the rankings provide attention.
